Hi Barry, Thanks for stopping by.

I really wanted to give people advice on how they can avoid being fooled by some of these "SEO companies". Last year I saw someone doing a presentation, and his personal results were showing, on his screenshots his email address was even showing, and of course he was ranking for some mega terms, because they were his personal favourites via click thrus.

Good post Paul, I've seen a few companies boast about ranking for SEO in various confs & meetings - so this was really refreshing to see the proof :)

Nope not you Dave :D
Interesting to see that we have a similar view to the usefulness of ranking for [SEO] or related terms.
Thanks for post Ian Lurie's link, that is quite a good list there.

Thanks for stopping over here and commenting.

Hey Paul,
Good post and a good point to make. I hope that ONE company wasn't us ;)
I actually wasn't aware that we even ranked for the term in your second SERP screenshot. I can assure you now, little to no traffic comes from those terms and the traffic we get from them usually fills up the columns in out "Leaves Comment" goal in GA. This is clearly comment spammers. Essentially, the traffic is wasted bandwidth, resources and comment moderation time.

It's also somewhat of a vanity thing for others.

Ian has a great post on the questions a client should ask here:

Rand has a semi related post here:

Hi Leo, thanks for the comment (and RT). I'd like to inform the consumers a little more about these cloak and dagger tactics of some SEO companies, and to give them a list of some good questions to ask in a client interview. Hopefully it will help a few consumers out there.

Totally agree Paul. Most customers don't even know what SEO is, let alone to go looking for it. They'll usually ask their marketing provider, how do we get more people to our website. They're very unlikely to use industry terms in searches.
